E10 (10% Ethanol and 90% unleaded gasoline) is approved for use in any make or model vehicle sold in the U.S. Many automakers recommend its use because of its high performance, clean burning characteristics. It is important to note that it does not take a special vehicle to run on "ethanol". All vehicles are "ethanol vehicles" and can use up to 10% ethanol with no modifications to the engine. Often E85 (85% ethanol and 15% unleaded gasoline) is confused for "ethanol", believing incorrectly that not all vehicles are ethanol compatible.
The American Coalition for Ethanol (ACE) is leading efforts to attend to any hurdles to using ethanol blends above 10%, such as E20 and E30. If these higher percentages could be used in standard vehicles, the U.S. could significantly decrease our dependence on petroleum from foreign countries. New research shows that mid-range ethanol blends can in some cases provide better fuel economy than regular unleaded gasoline - even in standard, non flex-fuel vehicles. The research suggests there is an "optimal blend level" of ethanol and gasoline (most likely E20 or E30) at which vehicles get better gas mileage than predicted. E85 is an alternative fuel for use in flexible vehicles (FFV). There are currrently more than 6 million FFV's on America's roads with more coming each month. In conjunction with more flex-fuel vehicles, more E85 pumps are being installed across the country.
The production and use of ethanol benefits our economy on all levels - local, state, and national. From the local communities where the crops are grown and processed to the metropolitan areas where drives fill up with a domestically produced fuel, American-made ethanol propels the economy. Money spent on ethanol in the Midwest stays in the Midwest.
